Introducción: La Enfermedad Periodontal y la Enfermedad Cardiovascular Aterosclerótica son condiciones inflamatorias crónicas que pueden tener una relación causal, debido a los factores de riesgo comunes entre las dos patologías; se ha establecido una posible asociación entre estas dos enfermedades, donde la enfermedad periodontal puede causar efectos a nivel sistémico y promover la enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica, mediante dos vías diferentes. Estas vías pueden ser directas o indirectas. Objetivo: Establecer el papel de la enfermedad periodontal como factor de riesgo de la enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica con énfasis en la vía indirecta donde se dan posibles vínculos entre estas dos patologías a partir de los marcadores inflamatorios. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó una revisión de literatura científica, identificando artículos que sugirieran una asociación entre la enfermedad periodontal y la enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica. Se incluyeron artículos en ingles y español; se excluyeron estudios realizados en animales y los que tuvieran solamente información sobre la vía directa, que relaciona la enfermedad periodontal con enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica a través de patógenos periodontales. Resultados: La enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica es la patología sistémica más común en pacientes con enfermedad periodontal y ambas están mediadas por un proceso inflamatorio que incrementa el nivel de los marcadores inflamatorios como proteína C reactiva, fibrinógeno e Interleucina-6. El control de la infección periodontal, tiene una influencia positiva en la disminución de los marcadores inflamatorios. Los mecanismos con los que se relacionan ambas patologías no están claros, se cree que la periodontitis como inflamación sistémica contribuye al desarrollo y mantenimiento de la aterosclerosis a través de la activación de una cascada de reacciones bioquímicas, inicio y desarrollo de la formación de la placa y lesión del endotelio. Conclusión: La enfermedad periodontal juega un papel crítico como proceso inflamatorio crónico a nivel sistémico, pues es clara la evidencia científica con respecto a la elevación de niveles séricos de marcadores inflamatorios, reflejado en el agravamiento de otras patologías como la enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica. |

Repositorio Institucional Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia.http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12494/44531Introducción: La Enfermedad Periodontal y la Enfermedad Cardiovascular Aterosclerótica son condiciones inflamatorias crónicas que pueden tener una relación causal, debido a los factores de riesgo comunes entre las dos patologías; se ha establecido una posible asociación entre estas dos enfermedades, donde la enfermedad periodontal puede causar efectos a nivel sistémico y promover la enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica, mediante dos vías diferentes. Estas vías pueden ser directas o indirectas. Objetivo: Establecer el papel de la enfermedad periodontal como factor de riesgo de la enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica con énfasis en la vía indirecta donde se dan posibles vínculos entre estas dos patologías a partir de los marcadores inflamatorios. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó una revisión de literatura científica, identificando artículos que sugirieran una asociación entre la enfermedad periodontal y la enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica. Se incluyeron artículos en ingles y español; se excluyeron estudios realizados en animales y los que tuvieran solamente información sobre la vía directa, que relaciona la enfermedad periodontal con enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica a través de patógenos periodontales. Resultados: La enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica es la patología sistémica más común en pacientes con enfermedad periodontal y ambas están mediadas por un proceso inflamatorio que incrementa el nivel de los marcadores inflamatorios como proteína C reactiva, fibrinógeno e Interleucina-6. El control de la infección periodontal, tiene una influencia positiva en la disminución de los marcadores inflamatorios. Los mecanismos con los que se relacionan ambas patologías no están claros, se cree que la periodontitis como inflamación sistémica contribuye al desarrollo y mantenimiento de la aterosclerosis a través de la activación de una cascada de reacciones bioquímicas, inicio y desarrollo de la formación de la placa y lesión del endotelio. Conclusión: La enfermedad periodontal juega un papel crítico como proceso inflamatorio crónico a nivel sistémico, pues es clara la evidencia científica con respecto a la elevación de niveles séricos de marcadores inflamatorios, reflejado en el agravamiento de otras patologías como la enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica.Introduction: Periodontal disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease are chronic inflammatory conditions that may have a causal relationship due to common risk factors between the two diseases, it has established a possible association between these two diseases, where the periodontal disease can cause systemic effects and promote atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, by two different methods. These pathways can be direct or indirect. Objective: To establish the role of the periodontal disease as a risk factor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with emphasis on the indirect pathway where there are possible links between these two diseases from inflammatory markers. Materials and Methods: A review of scientific literature, identifying items that suggest an association between periodontal disease and the atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. We included articles in English and Spanish, were excluded animal studies and those who had only information on the direct route, which links periodontal disease with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease by periodontal pathogens. Results: The atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the most common systemic disease in patients with periodontal disease and both are mediated by an inflammatory process that increases the level of inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and interleukin-6. The periodontal infection control has a positive influence on reducing inflammatory markers. The mechanisms which are associated with both conditions are not clear, it is believed that periodontitis as systemic inflammation contributes to the development and maintenance of atherosclerosis through the activation of a cascade of biochemical reactions, the onset and development of plaque formation and endothelial injury.
