In Colombia, the possession of exotic fauna as pets is a practice that has been booming in recent years. However, this is a trend that has brought with it a magnitude of complications caused by the majority of this fauna does not asimilate well to their domestic life in that they are not offered the requirements needed to develop their skills in the wild. In consequence, pathologies are set off due to the systemic discomort of the different species.Based on the above, the veterinary doctor needs to keep themselves up to date about these illnesses in order to be suited to offer adequate care and treadment for these pets based in current paramenters, and the provision of resources for the assertive service for the specimen as well as make the owner aware about the basic needs of the species. In addition, the Colombian Agricultural Institude (ICA- Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario) has established certain requirements for the import of exotic fauna species and responsible possession of the same with the purpose of mantaining sanitary control and avoiding them from becoming invasive fauna that affects the biological cycle of flora and fauna in Colombia. Despite this, there is a legal vacuum regarding the number of species that can be bred and clandestine farms for said species altering their genetics. Thus, this paper aims to collect information about the legal, clinical and management aspects to keep in mind for the responsible possession of non-conventional pets in Colombia, considering the corresponding national law. In conclusion, the responsible possession of non-conventional pets requires of practices and care depending on the species in order to avoid alienating it of its natural behaviors, resulting in animal abuse.1.
