Principales protozoarios gastrointestinales en chigüiros silvestres (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) en una vereda del municipio de Arauca, Colombia

The capybara is the world’s largest rodent, this wild mammal can get to host about 50 species of gastrointestinal parasites, of which some species of protozoa may be of interest zoonotic. In order to identify the main protozoan affecting this rodent in the municipality of Arauca, 360 were randomly f...

(3):p. 261-268. .The capybara is the world’s largest rodent, this wild mammal can get to host about 50 species of gastrointestinal parasites, of which some species of protozoa may be of interest zoonotic. In order to identify the main protozoan affecting this rodent in the municipality of Arauca, 360 were randomly fresh fecal samples from a natural population during the summer and winter. Macroscopic examination was performed by direct observation, microscopic examination while the sedimentation method Telemann Modified MTM was used. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and nonparametric (DMS). Among the results of appearance frequency of 97% it was observed, identifying the species protozoan Eimeria spp., Giardia spp., Sarcocystis spp., Cycloposthium minutum, Cycloposthium incurvum, Cycloposthium compressum, Cycloposthium hydrochoeri and Cycloposthium lenticularis. The presence of this group of endoparasites in this research may be regulated by environmental conditions, which can promote the development and survival of preparasitic forms in the field; which implies a greater likelihood of infection, especially in the most susceptible groups such as nursing mothers and young. The above findings are new and important for the epidemiology of these parasites in the region, because they constitute the first report of infection in this wild species associated with the habitat they share with cattle and other domestic species in the municipality of Arauca, Arauca. © 2015, Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agricolas (INIA).
