Summary:Background: Sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics of suicide were identified, as well as one part of the population who attempted suicide in Popayan in 2007. The incidence of suicide in Colombia has been increasing since 1985 when it was 3.5 per 100,000 people per year until 1999 which was 5 per 100,000 per year. Subsequently it has been held relatively stable, in 2007 suicide mortality in Colombia was 4.1 per 100,000 (4). In Popayan, rates per 100,000 habitants in the last four years were, 15.1, 9.8, 15.6 and 9.8 respectively, being higher than those of Cauca 4.5 (5). OBJECTIVE: To describe the phenomenon of suicide in the city of Popayan in 2007, considering the demographic and psychological dimensions of suicide and attempted suicide. METHODS: A comparative descriptive study was performed in which 122 subjects that attempted suicide were taken who consulted the hospital Susana Lopez de Valencia and the total suicides in the city of Popayan in 2007. The information in the case of suicide, was taken from death certificate, record minutes of lifting and handing over of the body and an instrument used at the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Science of the city where the forensic autopsy is performed; The same instrument was used to obtain the information in the case of suicide attempts by reviewing medical records of patients who attempted suicide and were treated at the hospital Susana Lopez de Valencia. The analysis of the collected data was performed using the statistical package STATA V.10. RESULTS: The results show the profile of the subjects who attempted suicide for the city of Popayan: being female, young people from urban areas, with low educational level, with stable family relationship, with conflict in the family, with no history of mental illness and who intoxication as a method of suicide. For suicide was defined: being male, young for an urban area with a higher educational level, with unstable marital relationship, with economical problems and conflicts with the partner and that use hanging as a method of suicide
