El fomento y tecnificación de la explotación del cuy (Cavia porcellus) en Nariño (Colombia) se han visto entorpecidos principalmente por la presencia insidiosa de la yersiniosis (pseudotuberculosis), enfermedad infectocontagiosa de origen bacterial, causante de más de las 2 terceras partes de la morbilidad y mortalidad de esta especie. Ante esta situación y la importancia del cuy en el desarrollo socioeconómico regional, el Centro de Diagnóstico del Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA) en Pasto, con base en 3.500 necropsias aproximadamente, practicadas durante los últimos 4 años, realizó el presente trabajo tendiente a describir amplia y detalladamente las características del agente etiológico (Yersinia pseudotuberculosis), la patogénesis, manifestaciones clínicas y alteraciones anatómicas macro y microscópicas de la enfermedad. También se describen los principales factores epidemiológicos relacionados con su presentación y se plantea la necesidad de continuar buscando sistemas prácticos y efectivos para su diagnóstico, prevención y control. |

También se describen los principales factores epidemiológicos relacionados con su presentación y se plantea la necesidad de continuar buscando sistemas prácticos y efectivos para su diagnóstico, prevención y control.The presence and high prevalence of Yersiniosis (Psew/onthercu/osis), an infectious disease in guinea pigs (Cuiii ic/Ins) named "cuy", has been one of the main factors which negatively affects the improvement of development of this specie as a livestock industry in Nariño departmentColombia. This disease produces more than two third of the morbility and mortality rates in "cuyes". Based on the previous statment, more than 3.500 necropsies were carried out whithin the last four years in order to describe both gross and microscopic lesions of the disease, as well as the characteristics of the causative agent (vcrinio pseuthoubi'rcu/osi.$), the clinical signs and the pathogenesis. Some other epidemiological factors of the disease were also studied. Emphasis was made in the necessity to establish a proper system of diagnosis, prevention and control of the disease.
